Graduate Programs

Two pathways into population science

UPPI offers two graduate degree programs that train the next generation of demographers and population specialists for careers in research, policy, and development.

MADEM

A thesis or non-thesis program designed to train practitioners who can conduct independent high-quality research, teach demography at graduate and undergraduate levels, and engage in population program formulation and evaluation.

A non-thesis program with a comprehensive exam and pre-print paper, focused on applied demography from an interdisciplinary perspective — building practitioners who can analyze the interrelationship between population factors and development.

The forum featured recent estimates on demographic and health indicators, including child health and development, maternal health and domestic violence, and fertility and planning. Dr. Maria Midea Kabamalan, one of UPPI's faculty members, synthesized the session by presenting the policy implications of the 2025 NDHS results. She highlighted that NDHS indicators are not only vital for crafting policies and programs to address population needs, but also essential for tracking the country’s 2030 SDG targets.

The UP Population Institute (UPPI) is pleased to announce the launching of the “Josefina V. Cabigon Memorial Scholarship” starting first semester, AY 2020-2021. The scholarship is open to new and continuing graduate students enrolled in the MA Demography and Master in Population Studies at UPPI. Preference is given to scholars who are financially in need and who are committed to public service.
